Perched on a narrow peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay, Fort Amsterdam does not simply overlook St. Maarten — it guards its story. Weathered by time, wind, and history, its ruins stand as one of the island’s earliest declarations of power, protection, and survival.
Built in 1631 by the Dutch, Fort Amsterdam was the first fort constructed in the Caribbean by the Netherlands — a strategic move to protect St. Maarten’s most valuable resource at the time: salt. The Great Salt Pond, visible from nearby Philipsburg, was once the island’s greatest prize.
