Fort Amsterdam St. Maarten: Where the Caribbean's First Dutch Fort Still Stands

Perched on a narrow peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay, Fort Amsterdam does not simply overlook St. Maarten — it guards its story. Weathered by time, wind, and history, its ruins stand as one of the island’s earliest declarations of power, protection, and survival.

Built in 1631 by the Dutch, Fort Amsterdam was the first fort constructed in the Caribbean by the Netherlands — a strategic move to protect St. Maarten’s most valuable resource at the time: salt. The Great Salt Pond, visible from nearby Philipsburg, was once the island’s greatest prize.

Peter Stuyvesant's Famous Battle

In 1644, Dutch forces attempted to reclaim Fort Amsterdam on St. Maarten. Leading the charge was Peter Stuyvesant — who would later govern New Amsterdam (New York). The attack failed, and Stuyvesant lost his leg on this very ground.

From Defense to Perspective

Now, only remnants of Fort Amsterdam’s walls remain on St. Maarten. Stones that once held cannons. Paths that once carried soldiers. Yet even in its ruins, the fort speaks — transformed from defense into a place of reflection.

Fort Amsterdam: Witness to St. Maarten's Fight for Identity

From its elevated position, Fort Amsterdam offered clear views of incoming ships — a critical lookout in a time when St. Maarten was a prize to be claimed. Today, that same view tells a different story — one of beauty, openness, and reflection. Surrounded by nature where pelicans now nest and the sea stretches endlessly.

Where St. Maarten's Story Began

Fort Amsterdam tells of an island that was fought over long before it was celebrated. Of a place whose value was once measured in salt, but whose true worth would later be found in its people, culture, and resilience. Because before there was a nation… before there were monuments, churches, and courthouses on St. Maarten… there was a fight to protect the land itself. And Fort Amsterdam — was where it began.

The First Fort in the Caribbean

Fort Amsterdam on St. Maarten holds the distinction of being the first fort ever built by the Dutch in the Caribbean — a historic landmark of global significance sitting on this island’s coastline.

A Place of Perspective

Surrounded by nature — where pelicans nest and the sea stretches endlessly — Fort Amsterdam has transformed from a place of defense into one of St. Maarten’s most breathtaking spots for reflection and perspective.
